3 Major Causes of Car Accidents

Car accidents are a worldwide phenomenon causing an increasing number of fatalities and injuries. In the United States alone, it was found that around six million car accidents occurred every year, with around ten million of them going unreported. Moreover, it was also found that approximately two million drivers in these accidents suffered from permanent, life-altering injuries. There are many causes of car accidents, and while we can say they are unforeseen and unpredictable, there are a number of measures we can take to avoid them. These include regular maintenance checks on our vehicles, looking out for blind spots, avoiding distractions and so on. Below we will list a few major causes of car accidents:

1. Distractions

Distracted driving is extremely dangerous and it has led to an increasing number of accidents. Past studies that were based on an evaluation of a six-second pre-crash video concluded that around 69 percent of 900 or more car accidents were caused by some kind of distraction of the driver. These included reading or texting, or being in unstable mental states of anger or sadness while driving. Using a GPS system or other such vehicle technology was also a cause of distraction for drivers.

2. Speeding

Speeding is known to be one of the most common causes of accidents. Speeding only increases the magnitude of the car accident and causes more hazardous injuries to the driver and other fellow passengers on board. In extreme circumstances, these can also prove to be fatal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has labeled speeding as being the greatest cause of vehicle crashes. They also stated that the cost of crashes related to speeding were approximately around $40.4 billion every year. Moreover, 33 percent of all speed-related crashes resulted in fatalities.

3. Teenagers

Many teenagers and others new to driving don’t have enough experience to drive on busy highways and roads, and they must be accompanied until they are comfortable enough behind the wheel. Many tend to use their cell phones on the road, and overcrowd their back seats with passengers too. It was found that 56 percent of teenagers tend to use their phones while driving, with one-fifth of 16 year olds incurring serious accidents during their first year of driving.
