Windshield Replacement

Repair or Replace? Here’s How to Decide What to Do with Your Windshield

The windshield is an integral part of your car as it supports the roof of your car and keeps you safe from incoming projectiles and prevents you from launching out of the car in the event of an accident. There were around 36,000 deaths due to motor vehicle accidents in the United States in 2019. So, it is essential to maintain your car and its windshield for safety reasons. Here are a few factors that can help you decide whether you should repair or replace your windshield.

1. Crack on The Windshield

· Size

If you have a crack on your windshield due to a slight impact, you need to check the crack’s size. If it is a small crack, it can be easily repaired with an auto glass repair specialist’s help. They have specific sealants to fix such cracks without obscuring the driver’s vision. When there is a bigger crack on your windscreen, you’ll have to get the whole windshield replaced as it can spread quickly and cause problems while driving. In addition to that, it can also cause the windscreen to shatter after a small impact.

· Depth

There are layers of glass that protect the windshield. The outer glass and inner glass are bonded together with a resin layer known as polyvinyl butyral (PVB). When there is a slight impact, the outer layer of the glass shatters. This can be easily repaired. However, if there’s a strong impact, it can damage the laminated layer and the inner layer, causing the windshield to shatter completely. This, of course, would need an immediate replacement.

2. Location of the Damage

You need to check the location of the damage to assess whether you’d require a repair or replacement. If the crack is toward the outer edge, it can be dangerous for the vehicle’s occupants, so it would need a replacement.   The crack might also cause a disturbance if it is right in the line of the driver’s sight, leading to an accident due to visibility issues. The crack can also reflect light in the eyes during the night while driving.

3. Amount of Damage

Your windshield can be repaired if it has a few cracks or scratches. If there are more than that, then there’s a risk of it being shattered. More cracks can weaken the windscreen causing safety issues for the occupants of the vehicle. You can contact us for professional auto glass repair and replacement services in Houston.
