Safety Measures You Need to Take After Windshield Installation

Windshield replacements can cost you a lot if you don’t have comprehensive insurance. So if you’ve just bought a new car or had to get a replacement, you need to take a few precautionary measures to ensure that it’s not compromised. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Wait a Day to Drive

The initial few hours after a windshield replacement are difficult; while it takes hardly 30 to 60 minutes to replace the windshield itself, drivers have to wait a considerable amount of time before taking their car out for a spin. The repair process uses an adhesive that fixes the glass into place and creates a seal. It takes an hour for the bonding agent to dry and settle. Your technician will brief you about this, but it’s still better to be safe than sorry. Moreover, before getting into the car, make sure to have a look around for glass pieces from the installation to avoid an injury and to know if it was installed correctly or not.

Be Gentle

Auto glass replacements are very delicate for the initial 24 hours. Avoid any harsh impacts to the car that could possibly dislocate the glass. Moreover, gently open and close the doors and don’t drive on bumpy roads. A brand new windshield doesn’t need unnecessary pressure, unless you’re prepared for yet another repair in a few days.

Avoid Car Washes

Using cleaning agents can potentially damage your windshield’s seal. Avoid washing your car for at least three days after the installation. High-pressure water jets can also break the seal of the newly installed glass. A special tape is also used to stabilize the car’s windshield; this should not be removed until 24 hours after the installation.

Change the Route

A stray rock or debris from a construction area can also cause damage to the windshield. Try changing your route for a couple of days to prevent damage to your car and passengers. Also, if you had to get a windshield repair due to vandalism in a parking area, consider a new route for your daily commute.
