Windshield Replacement

Things to Check after Replacing Your SUV’s Windshield

A car’s windshield can be damaged due to several reasons such as unpaved roads, debris, weather conditions, etc. It is pertinent to get the windshield repaired or replaced depending on the intensity of the damage. However, you cannot just sit back and go on a long drive just after your SUV’s windshield has been fixed. There are certain things that you need to check post-installation to ensure your safety and safeguard your investment. In the initial days of windshield installment, examine any irregularities or discrepancies while driving and contact the people you hired to do the job. It is better to get it fixed as soon as possible rather than waiting for anything unfavorable to happen and have your investment go down the drain.

1. Examine the Edges

After having the windshield replaced, examine the edges closely to identify any gaps present. The windshield must fit the car perfectly without any loose edges. Having so calls for another replacement because driving around with a loosely-fitted windshield can put a risk on your safety. Check for any blemishes or bubbles in the windshield. It indicates improper installation.

2. Keep the Windows open

The reason for keeping your car windows open post-installation is to avoid the build-up of air pressure that can cause leaks as the adhesive dries. Roll the windows down 1-inch after the replacement and do this for at least a day.

3. Avoid Driving the First Few Hours

It is preferable to let the car windshield rest and set for an hour or two before taking it out for a drive. The windshield is sealed with polyurethane windshield adhesive that requires a particular time to dry depending on the surrounding temperature and humidity. At most, a day is enough to allow the adhesive to fully cure.

4. Avoid An Immediate Car Wash

During a car wash, the car comes in contact with chemicals and water pressure that can weaken the urethane adhesive and cause the windshield to break. Thus, it is safer for you to avoid a car wash for 24 hours after replacing the windshield. You should also avoid using any chemical cleaners to clean the windshield as it can deteriorate the sealing.

5. Keep Your Car Clean Inside And Out

De-clutter your SUV’s dashboard to avoid exerting pressure on the windshield in any way.  Do not place any sticker or seal on the newly installed windshield until it cures. This also includes placing shades on the windows and windshields.   If this seems too much to process, connect with us at AAR Auto Glass.
